The Answer Is Community
I’m finding myself today thinking about the blessings of community. Now, of course, that is one of the “enduring principles” but I’m not sure we realize just how significant—and huge it is.
Oh of course we acknowledge how wonderful it is to belong to a group of friends we can count on . Just how important it is to have a supportive community when we need a friend who’ll drive us to church or to the doctor, someone who always has time to chat when we’re feeling lonely, someone who really cares how we’re doing after a bout of flu, or a heart attack. And those are indeed legitimate examples of the blessings of community.
But there’s more.
One community that blesses me every week is our discussion group. Some topics we talk about can get pretty serious. So many big questions! The climate emergency, the affordability crisis, political uncertainty, unrelenting news coverage of every kind of tragedy appear to give us no peace. I think we’ve tackled them all at one time or other. We’ve looked for hope and we’ve discovered that hope comes from action.
One important thing we’ve learned is that no matter how big the issue, somewhere there is a community, or more than one community at work on the problem. One person can’t do much when the issue is as big as the whole world. And yet there is no problem that can’t be made better by a determined community working collaboratively and creatively together.
It takes work to find them. But doing that work is part of the process. If you care about something get to work , do the research, dig into the back stories. Make the calls, check out the web sites. Remember your objective is to find the community who cares about it too, who’s already doing something. Then join them in whatever way you can.
Whatever the question, however complex, the answer is “Community.”
Oh and I should also mention. When you find them you’ll also find folks who care when you’re laid up after surgery or need a drive to a meeting. Those are some of the byproducts, the blessings of community.
